Convert Length, Weight, Volume, Speed and Data Units

The world never finished agreeing on units. Recipes mix millilitres with cups, running distances jump between kilometres and miles, and storage is quoted in both decimal gigabytes and binary gibibytes — which differ by about 7% and cause endless confusion about "missing" disk space.

This converter covers seven families of units with exact conversion factors, showing your value in every unit of the chosen family at once. That last part matters: seeing the whole family makes it obvious when you have picked the wrong unit.

Key features

  • Seven unit families — length, weight, area, volume, speed, time and digital data.
  • Exact factors — an inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg, not rounded approximations.
  • Whole-family table — your value converted into every unit at once, not just the one you selected.
  • Decimal and binary data units — KB and KiB, MB and MiB, kept properly distinct.
  • Sensible precision — very large and very small results switch to scientific notation instead of losing meaning.
100% client-side — no data leaves your machine

This tool runs entirely inside your browser using native Web APIs. Your files and text are never uploaded to a server, never logged and never shared with third parties.

How to use: Unit Converter

  1. Choose a unit family
Pick length, weight, area, volume, speed, time or data from the row of tabs.
  2. Enter your value and source unit
The converted result appears immediately in the panel opposite.
  3. Choose the target unit
Or use Swap to reverse the direction without retyping anything.
  4. Scan the full table
Every unit in the family is listed underneath, which is the fastest way to spot a unit mix-up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a megabyte and a mebibyte?

A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576. Drive manufacturers use decimal MB and GB while operating systems often report binary MiB and GiB, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as roughly 931 GB in Windows. Nothing is missing — the two are just counting differently.

How many kilometres is a mile?

Exactly 1.609344 km, since the international mile is defined as 1,760 yards and a yard as exactly 0.9144 metres. The reverse is about 0.621371 miles per kilometre.

Why do US and UK pints differ?

They were standardised separately. A US liquid pint is about 473 ml while a UK imperial pint is about 568 ml — a 20% difference that catches out recipes and bar orders alike. Both are listed separately here.

Is the conversion exact?

The factors are exact where the definition is exact — inches, pounds and yards all have exact metric definitions. Results are displayed to ten significant figures, which is far beyond any practical measurement.
