Stamp a PDF Before You Send It
DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, a client’s name across a proof — a watermark says something about the document that the document itself does not. It also makes an unauthorised copy obviously a copy, which is usually the point.
The watermark is drawn into the page content, so it is part of the document rather than an annotation layer a reader can switch off. It sits above the existing content at whatever opacity you choose.

Frequently asked questions
Can the watermark be removed?
Not from the reader’s interface, because it is drawn into the page content rather than added as an annotation layer. A determined person with the right software can edit any PDF content, so treat a watermark as a deterrent and a label, not as protection.
Why is my watermark cut off at the edge?
The text is positioned from its starting point, and a long phrase at a large size will run past the page. Reduce the size, shorten the text, or use the diagonal placement, which has the most room.
Does the watermark appear when printed?
Yes. It is part of the page content, so it prints exactly as it appears on screen — including the opacity, which on paper reads as a lighter grey.
Can I use an image as the watermark?
