Page numbers are the difference between a document someone can discuss and one they cannot. "The third paragraph on page 14" is a reference; "somewhere near the middle" is not. Plenty of documents arrive without them — exported slides, merged scans, anything assembled from parts.
The numbers here are drawn as real text using one of the fourteen fonts every PDF reader has built in. Nothing is embedded, the file barely grows, and the numbers are selectable and searchable like any other text.

Frequently asked questions
Will the numbers cover up existing content?
They are drawn on top, so a number placed over existing text would sit on it. Increase the margin to push them further into the blank edge of the page — 28 to 40 points clears the text area of most documents.
Can I number a document that already has page numbers?
You can, but you will end up with two sets. If the existing numbers are wrong, there is no way to remove printed page numbers without re-rendering the page — they are part of the content.
Why skip the first page?
Because a title page is conventionally unnumbered while still counting as page one — or not counting at all. The option handles both: skipping removes the number from page one, and the start value controls what page two is called.
Does adding numbers make the file much larger?
No. The fonts used are the standard fourteen that every reader already has, so nothing is embedded. The growth is a few hundred bytes per page.
