This tool does both. Tap the pad or the space bar in time with the music and it averages your most recent intervals, weighting the newest taps so it tracks a tempo that drifts. Or drop in an audio file and let the analyser estimate the tempo from the energy envelope — useful as a starting point, and honest about being an estimate.

Frequently asked questions
How many taps do I need?
Two gives a first reading and eight gives a stable one. The tool averages your most recent taps rather than all of them, so a shaky start does not spoil a steady finish.
Why does the file analyser sometimes report half or double the tempo?
Because tempo is genuinely ambiguous without musical context. A track at 140 BPM has just as many onsets at 70 BPM, and an algorithm working from energy alone cannot always tell which the listener feels as the beat. Tapping along resolves it instantly.
Is the file uploaded for analysis?
No. The audio is decoded and analysed inside the page. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I use this for DJ beatmatching?
It will give you an accurate starting tempo, which is what most people want it for. Actual beatmatching still needs your ears and your pitch fader — a number tells you the tempo, not the phase.
