VAT & Sales Tax Calculator

Add tax to a net price or extract it from a gross one — correctly, not by subtracting.

Add or Remove VAT From a Price

Reverse VAT catches people out constantly. To strip 20% VAT from a gross price you do not subtract 20% — you divide by 1.2. The difference is real: on a £120 invoice, subtracting gives £96 while the correct net figure is £100. Businesses have filed wrong returns on exactly that error.

This calculator works in both directions and shows the net, the tax and the gross together every time, so the numbers reconcile at a glance. Presets cover the common rates and any custom rate is accepted.

Key features

  • Both directions — add tax to a net price, or extract it from a tax-inclusive total.
  • Common rate presets — 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 21% and 25%, one tap each, covering most VAT and GST regimes.
  • Any custom rate — including fractional rates like 8.875%.
  • All three figures shown — net, tax and gross together, so you can check the arithmetic yourself.
  • Correct reverse calculation — division, not subtraction, which is the error this tool exists to prevent.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not just subtract 20% to remove VAT?

Because the VAT was calculated on the net price, not the gross. If net is 100 and VAT is 20, gross is 120 — and 20 is 16.67% of 120, not 20%. The correct operation is to divide the gross by 1.20.

What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?

Arithmetically, none here. VAT and GST are collected at each stage of production with credits; US sales tax is collected once at the final sale. The percentage calculation on a single price is identical.

Which rate applies to what I am selling?

That depends on your jurisdiction and the goods — many places have reduced or zero rates for food, books, children’s clothing and so on. Check your tax authority; this tool applies whatever rate you give it.

Can I calculate a multi-rate invoice?

Calculate each line at its own rate and add the results. Mixing rates in one total is not something any single percentage can represent.
