Frequently asked questions
Can this unlock a PDF without the password?
If the file opens without a password and only restricts printing or copying, yes — it is unlocked straight away. If it needs a password to open, the content is encrypted with a key derived from that password, and you need the password to decrypt it. This tool does not try to guess passwords.
Is it legal to remove PDF restrictions?
Removing restrictions from your own documents, or from files you have the right to print and edit, is fine. Do not use it to get around restrictions on documents you are not entitled to use.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is decrypted by JavaScript and your browser’s WebCrypto on your device. There is no server involved, which also means it works offline once the page has loaded.
Why does it say a certificate or DRM scheme is used?
Some PDFs are encrypted for specific recipients’ certificates or tied to a DRM server. Only the software holding those keys can open them, so no browser tool can unlock them.
Will the unlocked PDF look different?
No. Every object is decrypted and written back as it was; only the encryption dictionary is removed. Digital signatures, however, become invalid, because the file bytes change.
