How Fast Do You Really Type?
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a “word” is five characters. The test here uses common English words, so it measures typing rather than spelling, and starts the clock on your first keystroke so there is no rush to begin. When the time runs out you get your speed, your raw speed including mistakes, and your accuracy.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute is average for adults. 60 to 70 is comfortably fast, and 90 or more is professional speed. Accuracy matters as much as speed: most employers look for 95% or better.
How is WPM calculated?
By dividing the number of characters typed by five, then by the minutes elapsed. Net WPM counts only correctly typed words and their spaces; raw WPM counts everything, mistakes included.
How can I type faster?
Touch typing — using all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard — is the biggest single improvement. Practise accuracy first; speed follows. Short daily sessions work better than occasional long ones.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, with the on-screen keyboard, although phone typing speeds are naturally different from keyboard speeds, and autocorrect is turned off in the test field.
Are my results stored online?
No. Your best score is saved only in this browser’s local storage, and nothing is sent anywhere.
