Frequently asked questions
Why is my microphone not working in the browser?
Check the site permission (the icon in the address bar), the operating system’s microphone privacy setting, the mute switch on a headset, and that the right input is selected. On Windows and macOS the system privacy settings must allow the browser to use the microphone.
What is a good microphone level?
Normal speech averaging around −20 dB with peaks below −6 dB. Near 0 dB the signal clips and distorts; below −40 dB it is too quiet and background noise becomes noticeable when boosted.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
Nothing is recorded unless you press Record, and even then the clip stays in your browser. There is no upload of any kind.
Should I keep noise suppression on?
For calls, usually yes — it removes fans and keyboard clatter. For music or podcasts it can make audio sound watery; turn it off and compare with the playback.
Why does my voice sound quieter after a few seconds?
That is automatic gain control adjusting the level. Turn off Auto gain to hear the microphone’s fixed sensitivity.
