Fixing A Photo That Came Out Too Dark, Too Flat Or Too Blue
Most photos that disappoint are not ruined, just a little off: a phone exposed for the bright window and left the room in shadow, a grey day flattened the contrast, indoor light turned everything orange. Exposure scales the light itself, in linear light, the way a camera would — so brightening a photo does not wash out its colours. What is the difference between exposure and brightness?
Exposure multiplies the light in the image, like opening a camera’s aperture, so bright areas brighten faster than dark ones and colours hold. Brightness lifts the midtones while keeping pure black and white where they are. Exposure fixes an underexposed photo; brightness fine-tunes the mood.
Why does vibrance look more natural than saturation?
Saturation boosts every colour by the same amount, so skin tones and already-strong colours go garish. Vibrance boosts dull colours more and vivid ones less, which is usually what a flat photo needs.
Does it reduce the quality of my photo?
Saving as PNG keeps the result exactly. JPEG and WebP are saved at high quality, and the adjustments themselves are applied once to the original pixels, not stacked on a preview.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is decoded and processed by your browser on your device; there is no server involved at any point.
Can it fix a completely black or white photo?
Only partly. Detail that the camera recorded as pure black or pure white is gone and cannot be brought back; the shadows and highlights sliders help most when the detail is dark or bright but still present.
