Frequently asked questions
Why is the maximum-resolution thumbnail missing for some videos?
YouTube only generates maxresdefault for videos uploaded at 1280×720 or above. Older and lower-resolution uploads simply do not have one, and the host returns a small placeholder instead — which this tool detects and labels.
Is it legal to download a thumbnail?
The image is copyright of whoever made it. Downloading for reference, commentary or study is generally fine; republishing someone else’s thumbnail as your own is not. This tool does not change what the law says about the picture.
Does this work for private or unlisted videos?
Unlisted videos usually have accessible thumbnails since the URL is public if you have it. Private videos do not.
Are you storing the videos or thumbnails?
Neither. The tool builds the correct image URL in your browser and links you to it. There is no server on our side involved in the transfer at all.
