Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15–20% is standard for table service and 20% is the common default in cities. In the UK and much of Europe, 10–12.5% is normal and often already added as a service charge. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is not customary and can cause confusion.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides generally say pre-tax, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. On a typical bill the difference is small — a few percent of the tip itself.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
An added service charge is the tip. Tipping again on top is optional and usually unnecessary; check the bill carefully, as automatic charges are common for larger groups.
How do I split unevenly?
