Frequently asked questions
Which TIFFs cannot be opened?
Fax-compressed (CCITT Group 3/4) and JPEG 2000 TIFFs, and BigTIFF files over 4 GB. The tool names the compression it found when it cannot read one.
Is PNG or JPG better for scans?
PNG for text and line art, where JPG would blur the edges; JPG for photos, where it is much smaller.
Are 16-bit images supported?
Yes. They are converted to 8 bits per channel, which PNG, JPG and every screen use.
Is the scan uploaded?
No. The file is decoded in your browser, which also means confidential documents stay on your device.
Why are TIFF files so large?
TIFF is often saved uncompressed or with light lossless compression, and scans are usually high-resolution, so every pixel is stored in full. Converting to PNG keeps the quality and is usually smaller; JPG is far smaller for photographs.
