Hearing text read back is one of the most effective ways to catch writing that does not work. Clumsy sentences, repeated words and missing connectives are obvious to the ear and nearly invisible to the eye that wrote them. It is also a genuine accessibility aid for dyslexia, visual impairment and simple fatigue.
This reader uses the Web Speech API and the voices already installed on your device. Nothing is uploaded and no audio is generated on a server, so you can have a confidential document read to you without it leaving your machine — which is not true of cloud-based TTS services.

Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support this?
Chrome, Edge and Safari all support the Web Speech API on desktop and mobile. Firefox supports it but some Linux builds ship without any voice engine, in which case the voice list is empty — the tool detects this and tells you.
Why do the voices differ between my devices?
Because they come from the operating system, not from this page. macOS, Windows and Android each bundle different voices, and you can usually install more through your system accessibility settings.
Is my text sent to a server?
The text never leaves your browser. Most installed voices also synthesise entirely on-device. A small number are marked "network" and are processed by the browser vendor — choose a non-network voice if the content is confidential.
Can I download the audio?
Not from the Web Speech API — it plays audio but does not expose a recordable stream. Capturing it requires system audio recording software.
