Frequently asked questions
Why do screen readers struggle with this text?
Because these are mathematical alphanumeric symbols, not letters. A screen reader may read each as "mathematical bold small a", spell the word out, or skip it entirely. A whole post in styled text can be genuinely inaccessible — which is why emphasis should be limited to a few words.
Is this searchable?
Generally not. Search engines and in-platform search treat these as different characters from normal letters, so styled words often will not match a normal-text search. Keep anything you want found in plain text.
Why do some characters not change?
Because Unicode does not define a styled variant for every character in every style. Digits, punctuation and accented letters are missing from several ranges. Those pass through unchanged instead of being dropped.
Will it look the same on every device?
Bold, italic and monospace are reliably supported by most fonts. Script, fraktur and double-struck depend on font coverage and can show as empty boxes where the font is missing them — commonly on older Android devices.
