Frequently asked questions
Will a photograph from this be accepted?
The size and proportions will be right, which is what this tool controls. Acceptance also depends on things it cannot fix: a plain light background, even lighting with no shadow behind you, a neutral expression, both eyes open and visible, no head covering except for religious reasons, and a recent photograph. Check your own authority's guidance — the rules differ in details.
Which countries are included?
The UK and most of Europe at 35×45 mm, the United States at 2×2 inches, Canada at 50×70 mm, Australia, India, China and Japan. Many other countries use the 35×45 mm standard, so that option covers more than the label suggests.
How do I print it at the right size?
Take the 6×4 inch sheet to any photo printer or print at home on 6×4 paper with scaling set to none or 100%. "Fit to page" is what ruins it — it rescales the sheet and every photograph on it comes out the wrong size.
Can I use a phone photograph?
Yes, and modern phones have more than enough resolution. Use the rear camera rather than the selfie camera, which distorts features at arm's length. Stand about two metres from a plain wall, facing a window, with someone else holding the phone at your eye level.
Does it remove the background?
No — that is a separate tool, and for a document photograph a genuinely plain wall is safer than a cut-out. Some authorities reject digitally altered backgrounds, and an imperfect cut around hair is exactly what an examiner notices.
