Meta Tag Generator

Build title, description, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags with live length advice.

Generate Meta Tags That Actually Work

Three separate systems read the head of your page: search engines want title and description, Facebook and most chat apps read Open Graph, and Twitter reads its own card tags with Open Graph as a fallback. Miss any of them and your link shows up bare somewhere that matters.

This generator produces all three sets at once and checks your lengths as you type against the pixel limits search results actually impose — because a title truncated mid-word costs you clicks regardless of how good the page is.

Key features

  • All three tag sets — standard SEO, Open Graph and Twitter Cards, generated together and kept consistent.
  • Live length warnings — titles over roughly 60 characters and descriptions over 155 are flagged before you ship them.
  • Canonical and robots — the tags that prevent duplicate-content problems, included by default.
  • Large-image Twitter cardsummary_large_image, with the 1200×630 guidance built into the field label so the picture is not cropped to a thumbnail.
  • Copy or download — properly indented output, ready to paste, or saved as an HTML file.
100% client-side — no data leaves your machine

This tool runs entirely inside your browser using native Web APIs. Your files and text are never uploaded to a server, never logged and never shared with third parties.

How to use: Meta Tag Generator

  1. Enter your page details
Title, description and canonical URL. The length counters update as you type.
  2. Add a social image
An absolute URL to an image at least 1200×630 for a large card.
  3. Add your site details
Site name and Twitter handle, if you have one. Tick noindex only if you genuinely want the page kept out of search.
  4. Copy the tags
Paste the block into your <code>&lt;head&gt;</code> and test with the platform validators.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150–160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, so the exact limit varies with the letters used — but past 160 you are reliably getting cut off. Front-load the important part.

Does the meta keywords tag do anything?

No. Google has ignored it since 2009 and every other major engine followed. It is included only because some internal search tools still read it; it has no effect on ranking anywhere that matters.

Why does my link preview still show the old image?

Because platforms cache aggressively. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector both have a re-scrape button that forces a refresh. Twitter’s cache expires on its own, more slowly than you would like.

Do I need Twitter tags if I have Open Graph?

Not strictly — Twitter falls back to Open Graph for title, description and image. Add the Twitter tags when you want a different image or a specific card type, and always add <code>twitter:card</code> to control the layout.
