Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over a common denominator — ideally the lowest common multiple of the two — then add the numerators and keep the denominator. For 1/4 + 1/6, the lowest common denominator is 12, giving 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: flip it upside down and multiply. So 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8, which is 1 7/8.
How do I type a mixed number?
Put a space between the whole number and the fraction: 2 1/3. A negative mixed number takes the minus sign at the front: -2 1/3.
How is a decimal turned into a fraction?
Exactly as written: 0.75 becomes 75/100, which simplifies to 3/4. A rounded decimal like 0.333 becomes 333/1000, not one third, because that is the number you typed.
What does the line over some digits mean?
Those digits repeat forever. 1/6 is 0.1666…, shown as 0.16 with a line over the 6.
