Discount Calculator

Sale price, amount saved and the effective percentage off, including stacked discounts.

Discount Calculator for Sale Prices and Stacked Offers

A single discount is easy arithmetic. Stacked offers are where shoppers get caught out: "30% off, plus an extra 20% at the checkout" is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the true saving is 44%.

This calculator shows the final price, the cash saved and the effective percentage off, with each step broken out so you can see exactly where the number comes from. Add a tax or VAT rate to get the amount you will actually be charged.

Key features

  • Stacked discounts handled correctly — sequential, not additive, with the true effective rate shown.
  • Tax and VAT — applied after discounts to give the real checkout total.
  • Step-by-step working — every intermediate price is shown, not just the final answer.
  • Cash saving and percentage — both, because they persuade differently.

How to use: Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original price
    Use the pre-discount ticket price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage
The final price and total saving appear immediately.
  3. Add a second discount if one applies
The tool applies it to the already-reduced price and reports the genuine effective percentage.
  4. Add tax if you need the checkout figure
Tax is applied last, after all discounts, which is how almost every retailer calculates it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 30% off plus 20% off the same as 50% off?

No — it is 44% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: £100 becomes £70, then £70 × 0.8 = £56. You save £44, not £50. Retailers rely on this being misread.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). An item at £45 after 40% off was £45 ÷ 0.6 = £75. Adding 40% to £45 gives £63, which is wrong.

Should tax be applied before or after the discount?

After, in virtually every jurisdiction — tax is charged on the amount actually paid. This calculator applies it last for that reason.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A 50% markup on a £10 cost gives a £15 price, which is a 33% margin — the same money, two different percentages.
